Just Plane Chic: Travel in Style!

By the time I was traveling a fair amount as an adult, the days when even flight attendants wore stockings and heels were long past. Now, it’s not uncommon to see people shuffling around airport terminals in what looks like pajamas accessorized oh-so-charmingly with flip-flops and uncombed hair. (I do assume at least some of these people just got off a 16-hour transatlantic flight, and I make allowances accordingly, lest you think I judge too harshly.)

The constant refrain I hear is, “But I want to be comfortable!” (Well, obviously— so do I!) Considering all the griping I also hear about all the reasons air travel is less than pleasant these days, I’d like to offer this hypothesis: We’d all enjoy ourselves a little bit more if we (a) knew we looked amazing (read: effortlessly comfortable), and (b) had other stylish travelers around us to improve our view en route.

  1. I never travel without socks and scarf – thanks for the comfy travel tips!

    • Moi aussi! Even before some airlines stopped providing blankets, I always had something like a pashmina with me (I’m always cold on airplanes otherwise). They’re almost as big as a blanket, but soft and drapey enough to wrap as a scarf, and they don’t take up much room in a bag! And socks are one of my favorite knitting projects to travel with (they never outgrow my carry-on), so I always have some with me.

  4. Traveling soon, so thinking of this article as I pack 🙂

  5. A slideshow with good ideas! Fancy that! And I couldn’t agree more — I want a view when I travel! If we mutually looked good and enjoyed people watching, could we perhaps cut down on the “stress” of travel? Could this start a revolution? 🙂

    • That makes me wonder… If the clothes so many people choose to travel in these days are really all that comfortable, why do they still complain about flying not being enjoyable? (I mean, if we’re wearing clothes for comfort, why aren’t we comfortable?) it’s as if the flying part is incidental, all that matters is getting there, so why bother dressing well? Because what we wear has a direct bearing on how we feel (and vice versa). That’s worth making a slight effort!
